Chiropractor vs Physio
Many patients who go to physical therapy have at some point considered or seen a chiropractor. Chiropractors and physiotherapists often treat ailments and similar areas of the body, leading patients to ask, “What is the difference between a chiropractor vs physio?” While chiropractors and physiotherapists treat and even co-treat similar conditions, they both offer distinct perspectives on the goal and methods of achieving a positive outcome for patients. Below is a brief overview of the differences in training, approach, and treatment offered by chiropractors and physiotherapists.
Chiropractor
Chiropractic care means “doing it by hand” which is a realistic representation of the purpose of this field. Chiropractic focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of joints and spine disorders, with special emphasis on how the joints can affect the alignment of the entire body.
Physio
Physiotherapy can mean different things to each patient because, like doctors, the field is divided into many medical specialties. Generally, physiotherapists welcome the description of “movement specialists” paying particular attention to how the body moves and how it works as a whole. For this reason, physiotherapists provide hands-on “manual” therapy (ranging from spinal manipulations or adjustments to soft tissue work), and exercise prescription as well as neuromuscular education for independent healing and empowerment and to encourage self-management of symptoms. Physiotherapy filled a void in the medical field as it provided people who were unable to walk or function independently the opportunity to live their lives to the fullest with maximum function.

Knowing your health care providers and what they can offer you can help you stand up for your health. While chiropractors and physios offer an alternative to more invasive treatment methods, they also offer a variety of other health care interventions and options. Don’t hesitate to ask more about what your healthcare professional can do for you. You would be surprised!
